Recycle Week is an annual initiative to encourage people to recycle more by demonstrating the positive benefits of recycling. Now in it's 16th year, Recycle Week 2019 runs from 23rd - 29th September 2018.
This years' theme is "Recycling. It's in our Hands." The campaign will focus on capitalising on the general public's increasing awareness of the problems of plastic pollution and urge them to take action. 2019 has been a busy year for environmental activistslike, Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion. WRAP want their work to inspire and encourage everyone to take action. Even small changes in behaviour lead to big improvements to the environment.
WRAP said: “2019 is the year of the activist. We’ve seen this through protests and marches from Extinction Rebellion to Our Planet, Greta Thunberg to Sir David Attenborough – environmental concerns have never been so front of mind for the nation.
We want to capitalise on this as it’s a golden opportunity for us to inspire and support citizens to take action and make recycling the new norm. Recycle Week 2019 will be full of action. We will be asking people to recycle from the bathroom, the kitchen, the office and the great outdoors. Getting them to do something powerful and radical that will really make a difference.”
Reducing Plastic Waste
Shockingly, 79% of all the plastic ever created in still present in our environment. We have become a plastic planet but there is still time to turn things around if we take action now.
Consumers can do their bit by increasing personal recycling rates to ensure plastic waste doesn't end up polluting the environment. Don't forget to check
each room in the home and extend recycling to schools, offices, outdoor spaces and anywhere people gather and create waste!
There are many ways to increase personal recycling rates. Check out our blog A Lot of Bottle - Recycling Plastic Bottles for some hints & tips.
Brands and business can also support Recycle Week. Firstly, by promoting the initiative and helping to spread the word amongst your customers, users and employees.
Secondly, it also means actually taking a good hard look at your own business practices to see where you can improve waste management and recycling rates. Every business can improve sustainability by reviewing business practices to ensure they they are doing everything they can to reduce, reuse and recycle business waste.
